Lois, I can’t believe I am just now seeing this! I’m so sorry I didn’t see/reply earlier. I would hope that I would remember a woman I dated! And yes, I remember visiting your mom. I also remember your dog (was it Tuffy?) who loved to have his hind quarters scratched. What a wonderful story, and what a wonderful life your mom lived.

Thank you for taking the time to send me your comment. I have lost my virtual assistant so I haven’t published anything in a while. I’m hoping to get that solved for in the near future.

I am well, married to my second wife almost 30 years. She had a boy and a girl, and I had a girl. Now we have 5 grandchildren (a girl, and four boys from 8 to 1). We are blessed and highly favored.

I would have hoped to see you at our 50th, but realize it falls on October 14 and we are vacationing with all of the family at that time. Be well.

Good Morning, Jim,
I don’t know whether you remember me from Hanover College days. I read your blogs periodically and find them to be many times thought provoking and always relatable. This one in particular spoke to me. Do you remember visiting my mother in 1973 when she was in the hospital. (I’m giving your memory a workout!) She died almost three years ago at age 105. Her resiliency was to me phenomenal. When asked how she lived to be 100 she would say “Don’t sweat the small stuff and it’s all small stuff” and when confronted with a difficult situation she would say “This too shall pass”. I hope I grow up to be like my mom.

Richard, we found your comment! And a fine comment it is. I like your addition of what the leader ‘espouses.’ I believe you are right, that the disconnect between what I ‘tell’ you and what I ‘do’ is a huge warning sign. The impeccability of our word as leaders is critical to trust, relationship, and our influence.

Jim…. another stimulating and challenging post. I am curious, do you have ‘warning signs’ that Llopis does not list? For me, the chasm…not gap…between what the leader espouses and what the leader enacts…is a major warning sign… Who carries the message to the leader that these warning signs are present? How many leaders actually invite folks to ‘name’ these warning signs? You have my intellectual juices flowing… a nice gift…. Peace…the ‘Searcher’

Excellent article and you did practice what you preach in the article itself since the time spent reading it is indeed a meeting with you. You provided an excellent overview of the importance of meetings and how they can be used effectively. Then you did a fine recap in your summary. I used to have a PowerPoint slide at the beginning of hospital effective leadership presentations. It was entitled “The biggest problem in Hospital management?” and then the next slide gave the answer: “Ineffective Meetings.” Thanks again for offering your wisdom and experience. . .

I would also describe the satiution as is then ask the question: what impact do you think this is having on the team’s ability to achieve its objectives? On the assumption that the team agrees that the absences may prevent it from achieving its objectives, I would ask the team to think about how the problem could be overcome. It may be that the team or team members need to meet with the offending team members to establish why they have been absent.
